Heritage tour: modern architecture Stone Town

When you walk through Stone Town you will see many buildings with very different styles. Palaces of sultans, Indian trading houses, colonial residences and local buildings.

On this tour, we focus on twentieth century architecture. In 1890 Zanzibar became a British protectorate but still had a lot of Islamic influences.  John Sinclair was hired by the English government as the architect for the island and he combined the different styles in his work. These can be seen in the State House, the High Court and the Peace Memorial Museum, among others.

In the second half of the 20th century, Singh was the government architect and is famous for adding more greenery to the city, such as city parks, forodahni and the famous Creek. This green belt separated the wealthier people who lived in stone houses (from which Stone Town got its name) from the people who lived in wooden huts in Ng’ambo (the other side). His famous style can also be seen in many buildings.

During this unique tour you will learn a lot about the architecture from the twentieth century. From the influences of the famous Sultan Barghash to the buildings of the English architects.

If you are interested in architecture, this tour is definitely worth it.

Duration tour: 2.5 – 3 hours
