People from all over the world but mainly from the Arab world, India and Europe came here to trade. Sometimes they stayed here for a longer period of time and left their culture behind on the island. That is why you see in Zanzibar that so many different cultures are intertwined with each other. Men also married local women here and until today you see many people with mixed DNA.
In Stone Town there are many buildings that have played an important role in the history of the dhow. For example, the place where they had to pay their tax. In addition, people from all over the world also brought local food to the island. Many of these dishes can still be seen in local restaurants. Different styles of mosques were built and you can also see different architectural styles.
To this day, the dhow boats are made by hand. Different tree species are used for this and this is explained in the workshop. And of course you visit the harbour where the boats depart from today.
