13-day safari in Kenya and Tanzania
Day 1

Airport – Nairobi

You fly to Nairobi where a driver will pick you up. He will take you directly to your hotel and on the way you will see that you have landed in another world. Despite the fact that Nairobi is a big metropolis, you immediately feel the African atmosphere. You also drive past Nairobi National Park and you have a chance to spot your first zebra. Depending on your arrival time you can do an excursion in Nairobi.

Day 2

Nairobi – Nakuru

After your first breakfast in Africa you drive to Nakuru. On the way you stop at a viewpoint over the Great Rift Valley. This valley is about 6700 km long and runs from Jordan to Mozambique. You will descend over the escarpment to the town of Nakuru which lies in the floor of the Rift Valley. This is a fertile and therefore acgricultural area of Kenya. You sleep just outside the city in a lodge located at Lake Elementaita where regularly large groups of flamingos gather.

Day 3

Nakuru

Your first game drive is on the program. After an early breakfast you drive to Nakuru National Park and will be overwhelmed by all the wildlife you will see here. The park is famous for its rhinos, both the “white” and the “black” are here and the chance that you will see one is big. Which is very special because unfortunately the rhinoceros are on the list of endangered species and you don’t see them often.

The park is also known for its large number of species of birds.

During a game drive it is always exciting what you are going to see. You can spot zebras, grand gazelles, Thomsons gazelles, the Rothschild’s giraffe, buffaloes, waterbucks, baboons and vervet monkeys. Also here are lions and leopards in the park.

At the end of the afternoon you will return to your lodge with a satisfied feeling.

Day 4

Nakuru, Nakuru NP, Lake Naivasha

In about 3 hours you drive to Lake Naivasha. The lodge is right on the lake. Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake so you are probably welcomed by the sounds of hippos that sleep in the water during the day. You will also hear the cry of the African Fish eagle that is very common here.

In the afternoon you can relax in your lodge or do an excursion such as a boat trip where you will see lots of birds. And hopefully the hippos.

Day 5

Lake Naivasha

There are many possibilities in Naivasha. You can choose to relax here or do one or more excursions.

Hell’s Gate National Park is a park that you can visit by bike. What could be more special than to watch gazelles and giraffes on the bike and maybe have to hide for a buffalo? Nature is beautiful. You can visit the famous (or infamous?) Hells Gate by foot, for which you need good walking shoes.

If you do not feel like cycling, this park can also be visited by car.

Another excursion is a walk through the area near the lake where you also look for gazelles and giraffes. It is always special to see these animals without being in a car. The guide tells you about the environment of course.

During a high tea in Elsamere Lodge, famous by the family George and Joy Adamson who lived here, you can enjoy the sounds of the birds that are here in large groups. You also have a chance to see the black-and-white colobus monkeys here.

Day 6

Lake Naivasha – Masai Mara NR

Through the Great Rift Valley you enter the land of the Maasai. Narok is the capital of this region and you will stop here to stretch your legs. Then the road continues to the Masai Mara National Reserve , the most famous park in Kenya. Here the rule seems ‘the more famous the park, the worse the road’. Along the way you will pass many Maasai villages and see how the most famous people in Africa live. Small boys walk around with large herds of goats and cows and the beautiful cloths and jewelery are worn with pride.

Day 7

Masai Mara NR

One of the highlights of the trip is a visit to the Masai Mara National Reserve

During a full day of game drives (you bring a lunch box) you will undoubtedly see many animals that you have not yet seen in Nakuru NP. You can spot the famous Big Five on one day, with a lot of luck. These are the buffalo, elephant, rhinoceros, lion and leopard. In addition, the cheetah is a frequently spotted cat here. Again you see a giraffe, this time the Masai species. In addition to all these large animals you can of course see many types of gazelles. And along the famous Mara river you can spot one of the larger crocodiles.

From June to September the migration is here, normally. But we can guarantee nothing in terms of wildlife viewing, however if you witness this migration you will never forget this spectacle. More than 2 million zebras and wildebeests move across the savannas in search of food. And with great luck you will see them crossing the river! You can optionally make a hot air balloon ride in this park.

Day 8

Masai Mara – Lake Victoria / Tanzania

We leave the area of the Mara and set off for the border between Kenya and Tanzania. If you have all the official stamps in your passport, you will say goodbye to your Kenyan driver/guide and transfer to a Tanzanian car with driver. You will continue your journey and you drive through a beautiful area with large ‘kopie s ‘, large boulders that protrude from the landscape. Once again you cross the Mara river and then head for the second largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Victoria. You will stay overnight on the banks of this lake. This is a paradise for bird lovers.

Day 9

Lake Victoria – Serengeti NP

In the morning you can optionally take a boat trip or doing a bird walk. At the end of the morning you will drive to the gate of the famous Serengeti park, which is about 15 km away. Here begins another highlight of your trip, your visit to the world’s most famous park.

Serengeti National Park is the most famous park of whole Africa and some people say even from all over the world. Serengeti means ‘endless plain’ in the language of the Maasai and is a national park of approximately 14000 km². The park is famous for its many species of animals that you see here. You can also see the migration from about October to May. The migration migrates from one place to another, so it is never possible to say with certainty where it is. But we do have a rough idea of this so if you want more information about this, please let us know. Besides the big savannas, ‘de kopjes’ are also a beautiful nature phenomenon. Cats are often spotted here. You also hear hyenas often or see in this park and most probably also jackals. Even though you are not a birdwatcher, you will enjoy the colorful lilac-breasted roller that you often see here, the secretary bird and all kinds of vultures.

In the afternoon you travel about 180 km to get to the middle of the park. Along the way you will see the landscapes changing and you will often think ‘this scenery is familiar to me’. This is because you have probably seen many wildlife documentaries that have been recorded in this park. Large plains with some beautiful umbrella acacia. We will try to spot the leopard and other cats. And you won’t forget the beautiful sunset.

Day 10

Serengeti NP

Today, a whole day of game drive is on the program again. You take another lunch box with you so that you can decide together with the driver where you take it, of course in a special place. You will probably visit another part of the park today, but everything depends on where the animals are. In any case, this will be a wonderful day.

You can start the day with an optional balloon trip, followed by a champagne breakfast on the plain. An unforgettable experience. If you are interested in this, you must inform us in advance.

Day 11

Serengeti NP – Ngorongoro CA

In the morning you make a final game drive in this special park. The last stretch on the way to Ngorongoro Conservation Area you drive through the ‘endless plains’ from which the park derives it’s name. Kilometers long you see savannas with only grass. A few ears of lions sometimes stick out above. You can often see a fata morgana in this area, just pay attention. At the gate between Serengeti and Ngorongoro you can walk around and visit a viewpoint to take the last photos of the Serengeti. Here you will probably also enjoy your packed lunch.

Then you continue your way through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a unique area. This area is also called the ”. Archaeologists Leakey found excavations of various ‘ancestors’ at the Oldupai Gorge. Here you stop and visit this special place. Then you drive through a beautiful environment and you also see the landscapes constantly changing. The road is bumpy but you forget that soon. You will also see small manyatas in this area, settlements of the Maasai, the only people who live here. A beautiful colorful combination of people and surroundings. And then suddenly you drive over the famous rim of the Ngorongoro crater that you will visit tomorrow. You stop at a viewpoint to get a small impression and then you continue your way to your hotel.

Day 12

Ngorongoro – visit Ngorogoro crater – Karatu

Today you have your last game drive of this trip but it is not the least. You visit the famous Ngorongoro crater which is also known as ‘1 of the 8 nature world wonders’. This is because you visit the largest whole caldera in the world that is filled with animals. Everywhere you see wildebeests, zebras and gazelles. Hyenas are running in front of the car and wildebeests are looking at you in amazement. Large elephants are often spotted in the swamp area and at the hippo pool you can see these big giants floating and submerging. The black rhinoceros is found in the crater, but isn’t usually easy to spot. This is another paradise for bird lovers but everyone is impressed by the kori bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world. The birds of prey are also easy to spot. A special game drive where you can study the animals from close with the beautiful crater edge in the background. A wonderful end of your safaris.

Day 13

Karatu – Arusha / airport

After your breakfast you will drive to Arusha where your journey ends. Depending on your time, you can make a number of stops along the way. In any case, you will see some baobab trees on your way, a typical African tree that stands for wisdom. If time permits, stop at the local market in Mto wa Mbu. A small town famous for its banana plantations. In clear weather you have a view of Mount Meru and the highest mountain in Africa, the Kilimanjaro.
